Reflecting on Nordic APIs Platform Summit

The Nordic APIs Platform Summit has long been a beacon for the API community, bringing together thought leaders, developers, and innovators to explore the future of APIs. This year was no exception, and I was super happy to contribute to the dialogue with my talk on Collaborative API Governance and the Role of AI in Institutionalising Tribal Knowledge.

My Experience at the Summit

Arriving in Stockholm for the summit, I was immediately struck by the city’s autumn air and vibrant atmosphere—a fitting scenery for a nice gathering focused on fresh ideas and innovation.
Walking into the summit, the energy was super. I have been to many similar events and I have to admit that It’s not often that you find a room full of people as passionate about APIs as you are. Every conversation, every session, seemed to radiate a shared commitment to innovation and collaboration.
My talk was around the evolving landscape of API governance and how AI tools can help organizations move beyond the silos of "tribal knowledge"—the undocumented, experience-based insights held by individuals or small teams. Our experience is that with the rise of complex, distributed systems, it has become more relevant and important than ever to sort of democratize this knowledge, make it accessible by embedding it into workflows in order to ultimately create scalable, collaborative governance models.
The presentation felt great but what I enjoyed more were the discussions that followed. I had the chance to talk with different folks that raised some great points and (thoughtful) questions about the balance between automation and human oversight, and this gave us the opportunity to exchange ideas on governance and how specific governance frameworks could be the answer, especially when they are tailored to different organizational needs. Hearing firsthand these challenges others face in managing APIs kind of reassured me that, while the road to seamless collaboration may be tough and often complex, it’s a journey very worth pursuing.

Other Key Highlights from the Summit

The summit wasn’t just about sharing my own insights—it was also / mostly an amazing learning experience. The talks delivered by my peers were full of forward-thinking ideas and perspectives. Here are a few that left a lasting impression on me:
  • Bill Doerrfeld’s Keynote on API Economy Trends in 2024
Bill’s keynote was an excellent kickoff to the event, offering a broad yet focused overview of where the API industry is heading. He painted a vivid picture of the opportunities on the horizon, from monetization models to evolving standards, while also addressing the challenges of scalability and interoperability.
  • Jacob Ideskog: Fortifying the API Infrastructure
Security is always top-of-mind in API development, and Jacob’s session hit all the right notes. His insights into building robust, scalable API ecosystems emphasized not just protecting endpoints but also fostering resilience against emerging threats.
  • Asanka Abeysinghe: Embracing a Platformless Approach
Asanka’s talk introduced a refreshing take on reducing cognitive load for developers by moving away from traditional platform dependencies. His strategies for accelerating response times to market demands and enhancing team productivity resonated deeply with me, especially as we navigate similar challenges in scaling collaborative workflows.
  • Paul Dumas: Managing API Management
Paul’s presentation was a real masterclass in strategic thinking. He encouraged us to step back and view API management not just as a technical challenge but as an integral part of overall business strategy. His emphasis on aligning API goals with organizational objectives was a timely reminder of the importance of the bigger picture.

The Bigger Picture: Collaborative Growth in the API Space

If I could keep one thing from the entire Summit, I would say that the Nordic APIs Platform Summit underscored one key point: That is that the future of APIs lies in real collaboration. Whether it’s through AI-powered governance tools, platformless development approaches, or strategic API management, the path forward asks for a real collective effort and a genuine willingness to innovate beyond what we have known, beyond the (API) status quo.
I am very grateful to the Nordic APIs team, my fellow speakers, and the attendees who made this event so amazing. The ideas shared and the connections made will undoubtedly shape the next steps in my own journey and the journey of Apyhub—and, I hope, contribute to the broader evolution of the API ecosystem.
