Top 5 SEO APIs to Improve Your Search Engine Rankings in 2026

The Best SEO APIs in 2026: Rank Tracking, AI Visibility and Site Audits

Updated September 2026. Rewritten. Two of the original five entries were not SEO APIs and have been replaced. Added AI search visibility, backlink analysis, site auditing and schema validation, a comparison against the wider market, and a column for whether an AI agent can call each one.

The short version: rank tracking on its own stopped being enough this year. An AI Overview takes about 58% of the clicks from position one, and Search Console's new Generative AI report gives you impressions with no clicks, no CTR and no queries. The APIs below cover what you can still measure, and where the gaps are.

01Why rank tracking alone stopped working

Ahrefs ran 300,000 keywords against Search Console data. When an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page loses roughly 58% of its clickthrough rate. Position 2 loses 50.8%, position 5 loses 32.6%.

SparkToro's analysis of clickstream data puts 68% of US Google searches in early 2026 ending with no click at all, up from 60.45% in 2024.

So a report showing stable rankings and falling traffic is not a contradiction. It is the normal state now, and it is the conversation every agency and in-house team is having.

And the obvious place to look does not help. Since June 2026, Google Search Console includes a Generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode. It contains impressions only, grouped by page, country, date and device. No clicks. No clickthrough rate. No queries.

You can tell someone they appeared in AI answers a number of times. You cannot tell them for what, whether anyone clicked, or how they compare to a competitor. That gap is why the second entry below matters more than the first.

02The comparison

The agent column is new this year and it is the one that changed. Every option here can be called by an agent if someone writes a wrapper and maintains it. Only the MCP-native ones can be discovered and called without that step.

The rest of this covers the endpoints themselves, grouped by the question each answers.

031. Where do we rank

SERP Rank Checker returns ranked results for a keyword, with language and location as parameters. Multi-market tracking is a config change rather than a plan upgrade, which is the main reason to run this yourself rather than buying seats.

Get SERP Results goes to the top 100, which matters when a site is not on page one yet and you still need to show movement.

What to do with it: track weekly as a baseline and hourly during a migration. Flag which tracked keywords have an AI Overview present, because that flag explains more of the traffic story than the position does.

042. Do AI assistants mention us

This is the entry that did not exist in the previous version of this article and is now the most valuable one.

Analyze AI Search Performance measures brand and domain visibility inside LLM results across engines including ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It runs as an async job and returns more than a single score: prompt-level analysis, monthly time series for AI traffic and link presence, and a leaderboard comparing one target against up to ten named competitors for share of voice by engine.

Why it matters: Search Console will not give you this. Neither will a rank tracker. It is the only way to answer the question clients and stakeholders are actually asking, which is whether an AI assistant recommends them when someone asks a buying question in their category.

053. What is technically broken

Audit Website SEO and Evaluate SEO Health return a score, a grade, a structured-data breakdown and prioritised fixes.

Validate Schema checks structured data markup. This matters more than it used to: structured data is what machines read when deciding what a page is about, and machines are an increasing share of your readers.

Broken Link Checker and Extract Sitemap from URL cover link health and site structure. Reading a published sitemap beats crawling a site: faster, politer, and it reflects what the owner actually wants indexed.

What to do with it: run on a schedule across every site you manage. The delta between runs is more useful than any absolute score, and it turns a monthly report from measurement into recommendations.

064. Who overtook us, and why

Analyze Backlinks covers the link profile. Domain Authority Checker returns authority metrics with the underlying source data rather than a bare number, which is what you need when someone asks why a competitor moved above them. Advanced Domain Analysis goes deeper on search presence.

Find Similar Sites by Domains maps a competitive set from a single known domain, which is faster than assembling one by hand and usually finds two or three nobody had thought of.

075. What should we write about

Research Keywords handles discovery and analysis at volume.

Extract Text from Webpage pulls readable content from any URL with navigation, ads and boilerplate stripped. Paired with keyword and content analysis, it tells you what a competitor's page is actually about rather than what its meta description claims.

SEO Tags Generator drafts titles and descriptions from page content, which is genuinely useful at scale when you have several hundred pages with weak metadata.

08The one nobody uses: prospecting

If you sell SEO services, this is the highest-margin use of these endpoints and almost nobody runs it.

Search Domains by Keyword and Get Top Domains by Country find companies already ranking in a category. Calculate Domain Age and Domain WHOIS Lookup qualify whether a prospect is an established business worth pitching.

Run an audit before the first call and you arrive with findings instead of questions. That is the oldest trick in agency work. Doing it through an API means doing it for fifty prospects instead of five.

We covered the agency angle in SEO reporting in 2026.

09Building on these: three practical notes

Check sync versus job before you design anything. Rank lookups answer inside the request. Site audits, backlink analysis and AI search performance run as background jobs that return an ID to poll. These need different code paths, and discovering that mid-integration is the most common reason an SEO dashboard project stalls. Every service page states which it is.

Cache anything that does not move. A domain's registration date is fixed. A backlink profile changes slowly. Re-fetching them nightly is spend with no information gain.

Order checks by cost. Cheap decisive calls first, expensive ones only where they will change a decision. This matters most in prospecting, where you are running against a large list.

10Why the agent column matters

Every endpoint above is available over MCP, which changes what an SEO workflow can be.

A fixed pipeline runs the same checks in the same order every time. An agent can branch on what it finds: rankings held but traffic fell, so check AI Overview presence on those queries; a competitor moved up, so pull their backlink delta; the audit flagged schema errors, so validate the markup.

That branching is what an analyst does, and it is difficult to express as a static rule set. It also means the endpoint has to be discoverable at runtime rather than handed over in a tool definition someone wrote and now maintains.

11Conclusion

The deliverable and the outcome came apart this year. Rankings held, traffic fell, and Search Console gives you AI impressions with no clicks, no CTR and no queries to explain it.

Rank tracking still matters. It just stopped being sufficient on its own. What fills the gap is AI visibility data, technical audit data and competitive context, and the useful question when picking tools is no longer which has the best SERP coverage but which gives you the whole picture on one key.

12FAQ

What is an SEO API?

An API that returns SEO data programmatically: search rankings, keyword metrics, backlinks, technical audit results, domain authority or AI search visibility. It replaces manual reporting and lets you build your own dashboards rather than paying per seat for someone else's.

What is the best SEO API in 2026?

It depends what you need to measure. For SERP data alone, SerpAPI, DataForSEO, Bright Data and Oxylabs all do it well. For a full picture including AI search visibility, technical audits and domain intelligence on one key, a catalog covers more ground. The newer criterion is whether an agent can discover and call it without a hand-written wrapper.

Can I track rankings in ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Yes, with an AI visibility endpoint. It measures brand and domain presence inside LLM results across engines, with prompt-level analysis and competitor comparison. Google Search Console does not provide this: its Generative AI report contains impressions only, with no clicks, CTR or queries.

Why did my rankings stay the same while traffic dropped?

Almost certainly AI Overviews. Ahrefs found the top-ranking page loses about 58% of its clickthrough rate when one appears, and the effect continues down the page. The ranking is unchanged; the click that used to follow it is not.

Does Google Search Console show AI Overview data?

Partly. Since June 2026 there is a Generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode, but it contains impressions only. There are no clicks, no clickthrough rate and no queries, so it cannot explain a traffic drop on its own.

Is there a free SEO API?

Most vendors offer a trial or limited credit rather than an ongoing free tier. The ApyHub catalog has a free plan requiring no credit card, which covers the SEO endpoints alongside everything else in the catalog.

Are SEO APIs synchronous or asynchronous?

Both, and mixing them is the usual source of integration bugs. Rank lookups answer inside the request. Site audits, backlink analysis and AI search performance run as jobs that return an ID to poll. Check which before you design the flow.

Can an AI agent run SEO checks for me?

Yes, if the endpoints are discoverable. Every endpoint in the ApyHub catalog is available over MCP, so an agent can search for a capability, read what it needs, and call it without anyone writing a wrapper first. It can then branch on what it finds rather than following a fixed sequence.

What should I report on now that rankings do not predict traffic?

Positions with AI Overview presence flagged, AI citation share against named competitors, technical findings and fixes, authority movement with attribution, and content gaps. The first two together explain the traffic conversation; the rest show work rather than measurement.

How do I check what technology a competitor's site runs on?

Tech stack detection fingerprints the HTML, headers, scripts and cookies a site serves to identify its CMS, ecommerce platform, analytics and frameworks. It sits alongside the audit endpoints in the SEO catalog.
