An SEO API is an interface that returns search data to your code instead of to a dashboard: where a page ranks, what a keyword is worth, which sites link to a domain, what is technically broken on a page, and how often a brand appears in AI answers.

04Why Rank Tracking Alone Stopped Working

In February 2026, Ahrefs compared 150,000 keywords that trigger an AI Overview with 150,000 informational keywords that do not, using aggregated Search Console data from December 2023 and December 2025. Position-one clickthrough rate on the AI Overview keywords fell 58% against the expected level.

SparkToro, using Similarweb clickstream data, found that 68.01% of US Google searches in January to April 2026 ended with no click at all. The figure for 2024 was 60.45%.

A report showing stable rankings and falling traffic is now a normal result. Search Console only partly helps. In June 2026 Google launched a Generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode, and on August 31, 2026 it rolled out to all sites worldwide. Two practical notes. First, always start with the free Google APIs: Search Console for your own performance data and PageSpeed Insights for performance metrics. Paid APIs are for everything Google will not give you, such as competitor data, third-party rankings by location and backlink profiles. Get SERP Results uses SE Ranking data and returns the top 100 results by country, city and language, with device as a parameter and webhook delivery through pingbackurl. That depth matters when a site is not on page one yet and you still need to show movement. It runs as a job.

What to do with it: track weekly as a baseline and daily during a migration. Flag which tracked keywords show an AI Overview. That flag explains more of a traffic change than the position does.

082. AI Search Visibility APIs

Analyze AI Search Performance measures how a brand or domain appears in AI search results across engines. It runs as an async job and returns prompt-level data (prompt text, answer text, links and volume), monthly time series for AI traffic and link presence, and a leaderboard that compares one target with up to 10 competitors for share of voice, link presence and brand presence by engine.

Store each run with a timestamp. The value of a reporting pipeline is the difference between two runs, and that only exists if you keep the history yourself.
